This is something that comes up a lot in my practice (and of course for me personally), particularly as people are moving beautifully along the spiritual path and then get a bit stuck in old patterns. And then comes a ‘Kay pep talk’ about responsibility!
Unfortunately responsibility has a bad name, it can feel like a burden. When I say ‘responsible’ I don’t mean it in the way some of us were taught as children…. ‘you did that, now you’ll take responsibility and be punished’ or, ‘you need to take responsibility for your little brother/sister’, or as an adult, having a job/title with responsibilities and if you don’t complete them satisfactorily then there will be repercussions.
I mean taking ownership for all that we think, say and do. By living in the moment and being conscious of all that we do, and then accepting that we made the choice to think, say and do what we did, then being happy with that choice. We might not have done the best we can and maybe we’d do it differently next time, or maybe we can go back and make amends but it’s important not to beat ourselves up, not to punish ourselves or live in regret.
That to me is taking Spiritual Responsibility.
So often, I hear people say they’re unhappy with their ‘lot’ in life but… ‘I leave it up t the universe’ or ‘if that’s what the universe intends for me, so be it’, that sort of thing. Fiddle faddle! It’s up to us as individuals to create the life we want (keeping in mind that we chose this life and have things to achieve), and if we’re not happy with situations, then we have free will to make changes. By leaving our fortune up to a seemingly greater power then we’re not taking responsibility, we’re not moving forward but are passively waiting for a decision to be made for us. How can we fulfill our life’s purpose if we don’t take responsibility and move forward with action…. the key is to be connected beautifully with our higher selves, our higher ego, our I AM presence, our spirit* so that we’re flowing rather than pushing in areas that are a waste of time. And then we see that life is perfect, people come into our lives because we’ve chosen that at some level and at some time so our highest good. We learn, we grow, we take responsibility, take actions to learn and grow more and more and hey presto we’re happy and flowing, and fulfilling our purpose!
‘That’s just the way it is’ is a common one too… in family situations and relationships in particular. ‘That’s just the way our family is, has always been and will always be’ so there’s no point in taking action to break a pattern, behave differently, be different.. By taking responsibility for our own actions and reactions then at least we’re changing the scene for ourselves and it might just create a chink in the chains for those situations or people we thought would never change. Seeing another person change for the better is the best incentive to create change for ourselves (and even if they don’t ‘see’ it, your energy will have a positive effect on them).
A really common one is food… ‘I feel terrible, my skin’s bad, my digestion’s down right embarrassing’. Are you eating well? ‘No I don’t have time to/can’t afford to eat well’!!!! Hmm.
Or, ‘I feel so guilty every time I eat/drink (certain things) because I know it’s not great for my skin etc’. Rather than living in guilt, how about deciding not to drink/eat it, and be happy with that choice to look after yourself. Or if you really want it, eat/drink it, really enjoy it and be very clear with yourself about the reasons for making that choice…. ‘I’m eating this chocolate because it nurtures me’, then the vibration of the action will match the vibration of the food and you’ll enjoy it even more, your body will accept it more easily, and without the self-punishment.
I know it’s not always easy, changing old patterns is a challenge, but one that’s well worth tackling. Sometimes there are deep subconscious patterns, ancestral patterns, past life patterns that need shifting… and to do that we might need to ask for some help. But by making the decision to change and asking for help, then change begins already… because you’re taking Spiritual Responsibility!
* A Spiritual P.S…. so how do we connect with our higher selves, our higher ego, our spirit? It’s a matter of healing the ‘lower ego’ hurts and clearing the darkness, dross, toxicity so that the connection to our higher/true-selves re-ignites, then the light shines in and the connection strengthens, more light, more connection etc. So seeking help to do some deep healing, reading books which bring self-reflection, starting a daily practice which heals and brings that connection… meditation, Magnified Healing, Thai Chi etc. We are meant to live with that connection so once you start the healing, the rewards are amazing and the journey so much easier, after all we’re then working as one very powerful and very experienced being rather than a disconnected and often damaged body doing its best but feeling more than a little lost!
